Taking Back Woodhaven One Mailbox At A Time - Canceled

Update:  Thanks to Mike Miller and Dorie from Mike's office for showing up this morning.  Unfortunately, no one else was there and we had to cancel.  

As you drive through Woodhaven, you'll see that a lot of our mailboxes have been tagged by vandals.  These tags make our community look bad -- and leaving our postal boxes like that sends the message that we are tolerant of crime.  That we are weak.  

 

This weekend, we start sending a new message by taking back our neighborhood from the graffiti vandals, one mailbox at a time. 

Assemblyman Mike Miller has procured some of the Blue and Green Paint (in spray cans) from the Post Office, the same exact color as the mailboxes.  This Saturday morning (9/18), we are going to meet at the office of the WRBA (84-20 Jamaica Avenue) and go out in small teams to clean up the tagged mailboxes in Woodhaven.  

It doesn't take long to spray over a tag, so it should be a relatively quick process.  We'll need volunteers to do the spraying -- some teams may travel through the neighborhood by car (so if you can volunteer to drive, great) and some teams may prefer to walk about.  If you have a digital camera and can take before and after pictures, that would be a bonus!

We will be at the office around 10:30 on Saturday morning -- and we are hoping to get started around 11 (wear old clothing).  Please RSVP and join us -- it should only take a couple of hours -- feel free to e-mail us with any questions.  And if you can't join us Saturday, but you know of a mailbox that's been tagged -- please send us the location before Saturday morning -- [email protected]

Primary Day!

As you are probably aware, today is Primary Day across this nation.  And here in Woodhaven, citizens are headed to the polls to vote.  This year we are all using the Optical Scanning Machines for the first time -- we covered them on Project Woodhaven a few weeks ago here.

We're curious -- did you have any difficulty voting today?  Were the machines operating okay?  Were the poll workers helpful?  Drop us a line and let us know.

Whoever you support, whoever you want to win -- the important thing is to get out and vote!  

Woodhaven Town Hall Sept. 15: "Do You Feel Safe?"

Once a month, residents of Woodhaven gather to meet with their elected officials and to discuss the issues that concern them.  It's a terrific opportunity to get involved -- to bring your issues to the attention of those who can help you -- and to meet your fellow residents and neighbors.  The Woodhaven Residents' Block Association Town Halls are well-attended -- but we definitely need more representation from the community (e.g. strength in numbers).

Our next meeting is Wednesday, September 15th at 8 PM.  We are meeting at the Woodhaven-Richmond Hill Ambulance Corps, 78-15 Jamaica Avenue (map).

 

 

If you attend no other meeting this year, you should attend this month's meeting and voice your opinion.  The topic is a very simple question we'd like you to consider:  "Do You Feel Safe?"  When you walk around our community, do you feel safe?  When you go to bed at night, do you feel safe?  Come down and voice your opinion, let us know how you feel.

Note:  Usually, we record our Town Halls.  We will not be recording this month's meeting.  We want all participants to feel uninhibited to discuss their issues.

This month, the Woodhaven Residents' Block Association has stepped up its' fight against graffiti in our midst -- very soon we're going to re-take the mailboxes in Woodhaven and we're also starting to document all cases of graffiti vandalism in town.  Pretty soon, we'll be going to each home and securing permission to get it cleaned by the city.  We're also in the midst of trying to get our Security Patrol up and running again. There's so much more that the WRBA is doing -- just click here to read about what we've been doing over the last few months -- but we really can't do anything without the help of our fellow residents.

MTA To Meet & Discuss Renovations

On Wednesday September 22nd, the MTA will be meeting with the residents of Woodhaven and Richmond Hill to discuss the renovations to the Jamaica Avenue EL.  They will also answer any questions you have.

Note:  They will only be fielding questions on the renovations to the EL.

The evening, brought to you by the Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation, begins at 7:30 PM.

 

  

Richmond Hill Block Association Park Fair Sept. 11th

Continuing a long tradition, the Richmond Hill Block Association (RHBA) is hosting a day-long Park Fair on Saturday, September 11th from 11 AM until 6 PM.  There will be music, food, raffles and a slew of vendors selling all sorts of interesting items.

 

The Park Fair is held at the intersection of Park Lane South and Myrtle Avenue (near the Buddy Memorial).  

The Woodhaven Residents Block Association will have a table at the Fair, graciously provided free of charge by the RHBA, so please drop by and say hello!

Fall Dinner at Emmanuel Church September 25th

Emmanuel Church is having a Fall Pre-Fair dinner with entertainment on Saturday, September 25th at 5:30 PM.  The Menu will consist of Hungarian Goulash, Buttered Noodles, Carrots, a Fruit Cup and Dessert and Coffee and Tea (catered by Valley Caterers).  Singing and Piano Playing will be provided by Charles LoCasto and his friends.  The cost of a ticket is $15 Adults and $7.50 for Children 12 and Under, and the deadline to purchase a ticket is September 14th.  Please call the Church to reserve a ticket at 718 849-1153.  The Theme this year is, 'WHAT'S IN A NAME?"  Find out what YOUR name means and see if YOUR name is mentioned in one of Charles' songs.
